Australia Awards alumni explain Vietnam’s criminal laws at New Colombo Plan seminar

Four Australia Awards alumni, who studied law in Australia and who have deep knowledge of Vietnam’s criminal system, answered questions from New Colombo Plan students at a seminar on “Australian and Vietnamese Criminal Justice Systems” in Hanoi on September 28, 2016.

The students from Faculty of Business and Law, University of Newcastle and students from Hanoi Law University joined the seminar organized by the Australian Embassy. Key guest speakers included Ms Marie Andersson, the Liaison Officer of Australian Federal Police in Ho Chi Minh City, and four Australia Awards Alumni, Mr Le Hoang Duong, Mr Dao Ngoc Kien, Nguyen Tuan Anh (Ministry of Public Security) and Mr Nguyen Quang Vinh (Supreme People’s Procuracy).

 

The issues discussed at length at the seminar ranged from the reasons for Vietnam’s continued use of the death penalty, wrong conviction cases, return of convicted prisoners to home country prisons and return of illegal immigrants from Australia to Vietnam to differences in the law systems of Vietnam and Australia.

 

The seminar, followed by a reception hosted by Mr. Layton Pike, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission, was part of a two-week New Colombo Plan mobility project between University of Newcastle and Hanoi Law University.

The New Columbo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific region by supporting Australian undergraduate students carry out part of their study and undertake internships in the region.

340 Australian undergraduate students will study and undertake internships in Vietnam in 2017 under the Australian Government’s flagship New Colombo Plan education program.

 

This number has increased by over 35 per cent compared to 2016 and is more than double the number of students in 2015, when Vietnam first joined the New Colombo Plan program. In 2017, Vietnam will rank 7th among 38 eligible host countries/locations in the Indo-Pacific region in terms of number of students enrolled.
