Four Australia Awards alumni, who studied law in Australia and who have deep knowledge of Vietnam’s criminal system, answered questions from New Colombo Plan students at a seminar on “Australian and Vietnamese Criminal Justice Systems” in Hanoi on September 28, 2016.
The students from Faculty of Business and Law, University of Newcastle and students from Hanoi Law University joined the seminar organized by the Australian Embassy. Key guest speakers included Ms Marie Andersson, the Liaison Officer of Australian Federal Police in Ho Chi Minh City, and four Australia Awards Alumni, Mr Le Hoang Duong, Mr Dao Ngoc Kien, Nguyen Tuan Anh (Ministry of Public Security) and Mr Nguyen Quang Vinh (Supreme People’s Procuracy).
The issues discussed at length at the seminar ranged from the reasons for Vietnam’s continued use of the death penalty, wrong conviction cases, return of convicted prisoners to home country prisons and return of illegal immigrants from Australia to Vietnam to differences in the law systems of Vietnam and Australia.
The seminar, followed by a reception hosted by Mr. Layton Pike, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission, was part of a two-week New Colombo Plan mobility project between University of Newcastle and Hanoi Law University.
