Australia supports skills forecast for Vietnam’s port industry

On 26 June 2024, Australia and Vietnam launched Vietnam’s Skills Forecast Report 2024 -2028 for the Port Industry and an updated Skills Forecast Report 2024 – 2026 for the Logistics Industry. These reports help the Government of Vietnam, the port and logistics industry, and training institutions to understand future labour market trends and needs, to make informed staffing, training and investment decisions in these critical industries.

These reports were produced by the Logistics Industry Reference Council in partnership with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as part of Australia and Vietnam’s ongoing collaboration to enhance Vietnam’s vocational education and training (VET). The reports align with the master development plan for Vietnam’s seaport system for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, as set forth in Prime Ministerial Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg, 22 September 2021.

Speaking at the launch in Hai Phong, Deputy Administrator of Vietnam Maritime Administration, Ministry of Transport Mr Hoang Hong Giang said, “With its geographical location, Vietnam has the potential to become a regional logistics hub. However, we are still facing a serious shortage of professionally trained logistics and supply chain workforce. To address this issue, we need significant training investments and to develop strong linkages between ministries, seaports, logistics enterprises, and training institutions to ensure skills learnt are industry relevant and meeting demands for human resources.”

Mr Hoang Hong Giang, Deputy Administrator of Vietnam Maritime Administration, Ministry of Transport delivers remarks at the event.

These reports encourage closer links between industry and the VET sector so that businesses are getting well trained staff to meet demands and colleges are aligning courses and curriculum to industry’s needs. Skills forecasts also enable the Vietnamese Government to better plan investments in VET.

Vietnam and Australia cooperate to deliver VET graduates who meet the needs of industry.

Also speaking about the launch, H.E. Andrew Goledzinowski, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam said. “Australia has supported Vietnam’s human resource development for over fifty years, and we are pleased to be drawing together our efforts on transport, logistics and skill development in Vietnam. With Australia’s support, ministries, colleges and port and logistic businesses have worked together and now share the same outlook on skills needs over the next five years for the port industry, and the next three years for the logistics industry.  Our commitment in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam outlines our shared vision for Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth that requires a skilled and competitive workforce”.

Australia is sharing its own VET experience with Vietnam through Aus4Skills, a partnership aimed at enhancing Vietnam’s human resource capacity to capitalise on emerging economic opportunities and achieve long-term development./.
